More than 200 people gathered at Parliament’s Banquet Hall on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, as the Ministry for Ethnic Communities organised a special Eid al‑Fitr celebration marking the end of Ramadan.

The event, hosted by Hon Mark Mitchell, the Minister for Ethnic Communities, brought together Members of Parliament, community leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and emerging Muslim leaders, reflecting Eid’s values of unity, compassion, and shared celebration.

Hon Melissa Lee, Member of Parliament, attended on behalf of Hon Mark Mitchell, Minister for Ethnic Communities. She was joined by Ministry Chief Executive Mervin Singham, alongside key leaders from New Zealand’s Muslim communities, including Ibrar Sheikh (President, Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand), Dr Sajjad Haider Naqvi (President, Islamic Council of New Zealand), and Munira Khanum (National Coordinator, Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand).

A programme reflecting faith and culture

In keeping with Islamic tradition, the evening opened with a Quran recitation by Sheikh Mohammad Amir, followed by leaders’ reflections on the significance of Eid and the importance of fostering understanding and connection across cultures and faiths.

Guests also enjoyed a cultural performance by Soutul Malaysia (Voice of Malaysia), a nasheed group formed by Malaysian students at Victoria University of Wellington. Their performance celebrated themes of faith, gratitude, and unity.

Strong cross-community and international presence

Leaders from Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Baha’i and interfaith communities joined New Zealand’s Muslim communities in celebration.

Distinguished members of the diplomatic corps in attendance represented Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the international significance of Eid and its resonance across cultures.

Recognising partnership and contribution

At the conclusion of the evening, Muslim community leaders expressed their appreciation for the Ministry’s ongoing engagement and support. A plaque of appreciation was presented to Chief Executive Mervin Singham in recognition of his leadership and contributions as he approaches the conclusion of his tenure in June.

We thank the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) for partnering in the organisation of the event. We also thank the Islamic Council of New Zealand (ICONZ) and the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand (IWCNZ) for their continued collaboration.

We remain committed to celebrating the diversity of Ethnic Communities across Aotearoa New Zealand and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and connection.
