How we use social media

The Ministry uses social media to connect with all New Zealanders, including our Ethnic Communities. We aim to promote inclusion, and share timely updates on our work, including:

  • News, publications, campaigns, and other digital content
  • Information about our work programmes, events, and initiatives
  • Opportunities for community feedback and engagement
  • Job vacancies and career opportunities
  • Highlights and stories from Ethnic Communities across Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Significant cultural celebrations and observances recognised by our Ethnic Communities

We may occasionally share third-party content if it’s relevant to our communities, but this does not constitute endorsement or guarantee the accuracy of that information. Similarly, following or liking a person or organisation does not imply official support.

Our engagement approach

We welcome your comments, questions, and contributions. Our channels are monitored on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. While we aim to respond to queries where appropriate, we cannot guarantee responses to every message or comment.

Please note that any posts by individuals on our pages are their own views and may not reflect the official stance of the Ministry.

Our employees may also engage in online discussions. When doing so in an official capacity, they will use a Ministry for Ethnic Communities account or clearly state their role. Personal accounts used by our staff do not represent the Ministry unless otherwise specified.

Respectful participation and community guidelines

We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment across all our social media platforms, these include Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube. To support constructive dialogue, we ask everyone to follow these simple guidelines:

Be respectful

Treat others with dignity. Disagreeing is fine; abuse, harassment, or harmful content is not.

Stay on topic

Contribute to the discussion related to the post and avoid derailing conversations.

We reserve the right to hide or delete content, or block users, in cases including (but not limited to):

  • Hate speech, racism, or other discriminatory remarks
  • Defamatory or false statements
  • Misinformation or disinformation
  • Abuse, threats, or offensive language
  • Spam, trolling, repetitive or irrelevant content
  • Promotion of illegal activity
  • Sharing personal or confidential information
  • Explicit content, or violent imagery

If you come across any content on our channels that you believe violates these guidelines, please let us know.

We may also use anonymised comments or feedback shared on our pages for reporting or improvement.
