Former refugees, recent migrants and ethnic communities are an important part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s social fabric and economy. However, these groups face unique barriers in accessing meaningful work and opportunities.
The Former Refugees, Recent Migrants and Ethnic Communities Employment Action Plan includes actions targeted specifically at addressing the employment challenges faced by each of these groups, and cross-cutting actions to improve outcomes for all of them. It also includes actions to tackle temporary migrant worker exploitation.
The Plan is one of seven population-specific employment action plans that support the government’s wider Employment Strategy.
By providing better support for former refugees, recent migrants and ethnic communities to gain higher skills and work experience, the government can assist these groups to move into more sustainable and rewarding work while reducing their chances of experiencing negative employment outcomes.

The Former Refugees, Recent Migrants and Ethnic Communities Employment Action Plan was launched by the Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan on 25 March 2022 at the Ellerslie Racecourse in Remuera, Auckland and online via ZOOM.
