The Ethnic Communities Development Fund grants $4.2 million each year to projects that support ethnic communities to grow their skills, celebrate their culture, and take part in society.

Due to COVID-19, the priorities of the fund have changed. The new priorities are:

  1. Alternative means of staying socially connected – for example online community activities that relate to fitness, faith, recreation, languages or community learning.
  2. Employment initiatives – for example supporting community members to find jobs, or providing advice to businesses.
  3. Community resilience and recovery – for example projects and initiatives that support the wellbeing of community members.

Groups from any ethnic community are eligible to apply. This includes migrants, former refugees, long-term settlers, and those born in New Zealand who identify their ethnicity as: African; Asian; Continental European; Latin American; or Middle Eastern.

If your group has legal status – like a trust or incorporated society – you can apply for over $10,000. Groups without this status can apply for up to $10,000. You can also apply for more than one project a year.

For information on how to make an application, and a list of tips for writing a successful application please visit the “Fund” page of the Office of Ethnic Communities website. You can also contact a Community Advisor if you have any questions or need help with your application.

Applications are always open – you can apply any time.
